Your business logo isn’t just a graphic element or pretty design; it's a vital part of your brand. Your logo is a symbol that represents your business and conveys your values, vision, and mission to your audience. But what if your logo doesn’t do all of that?

Maybe your business logo never felt quite right to you. You might not even know what’s wrong with it or how to fix it, but you know that something isn’t right. It could be better, but you’re not sure how to fix it. What do you do?

Should you have a professional designer create your business logo?

If you have a clear idea for your business logo in mind, but you’re struggling to create it because you don’t have enough time or the necessary design skills to bring your vision to life — then you should consider hiring a professional designer.

In today’s article, I’ll explain why you should hire a professional designer to create your business logo.

1. You will save time and money

A  knowledgeable and experienced professional designer can save you a lot of time and aggravation. It may sound counterintuitive that hiring a professional designer will save you money since hiring a professional designer can be costly (depending on their experience level), but remember that your time and energy is a valuable, limited resource. The more time you spend trying to design a logo, the less time you have to focus on other important tasks essential to your business.

A professional designer may have hundreds to thousands of hours of experience designing logos using well-established, finely honed processes, which begin with an understanding of your strategy. It’s only when they have a deep understanding of your brand that they will move on to the actual process of designing your business logo. You can even hire a designer to take it further and build a brand identity (colors, fonts, imagery, etc.) to keep your brand consistent. A professionally established brand identity can make all your marketing activities smoother and stress-free.

2. Your communications with clients will be easier

To connect with your clients, a professional designer knows how to incorporate your brand message and style into the logo design. For example, your business logo can be clean and simple, vintage and retro, or elegant and sleek, depending on who you want to communicate with. Your designer will know how to create the right style for your brand to foster an emotional connection with your audience.

A professional designer communicates well and works closely with you. Ideally, your designer will ask a lot of questions to learn about your business, goals, and brand style before generating logo design ideas. This is the only way to ensure that your designer will create a logo design or visual brand identity that accurately reflects your business and connects with your ideal clients.

How do you know if you’re a good fit with a designer?

Take a look at the designer’s portfolio. Every professional designer has their own style and natural ability. As you go through the portfolio, take note of the designer’s strengths and sense of style. Does it match your style? Every professional designer has a unique approach to design — for example, some designers may excel at illustration, while others may have a more artistic style. Try to determine if their style aligns with your brand. The closer the alignment, the happier you’ll be with the outcome.

For example, my design style is simple and clean, which conveys high quality. I was born and raised in Japan, so my approach is deeply rooted in the Japanese aesthetic principles of simplicity, natural beauty, and refined uniqueness. It’s actually challenging for me to do complicated designs. I find simple design more direct, clear, and easy to understand.

Who would be a good fit for my design style? Clients who value simplicity and quality over complexity and quantity will best align with my services. Likewise, those who offer premium products or services or prefer a simple design approach would also appreciate my style.

3. Your clients will trust you more

A professional designer can create a high-quality logo that truly represents your business. The investment you make in your logo design can have a significant impact on your business.

According to Tech Report, a skillfully crafted logo can potentially enhance brand recognition by a staggering 80%.

95% of the world’s most iconic brands have chosen simplicity in their logo designs, emphasizing the memorability and effectiveness of clean, simple logos.

On social media, posts that include visuals, such as images or videos, experience an increase in engagement of up to 650% compared to text-only posts.

Based on these statistics, you can see how important visuals are for brand recognition, memorability, effectiveness, and engagement. Having a professional designer create your visuals will increase the overall effectiveness of your graphics.

When a professional designer creates your logo or visual identity, not only do you gain your client’s trust, but you also gain confidence in your new professional image so you can proudly promote your business.

4. You’ll receive logo variations as well as a primary logo

When you use a professional designer, you’ll receive the primary logo and several logo variations, , such as a black and white version, one with a single pop of color, or one with or without text.

A logo variation is a version of your primary logo design that is rearranged to give your brand the flexibility to show up consistently, recognizably, and in various placements.

For a business owner, logo variations are vital to ensure the continuity of the brand. If you only have a main logo without variations, you could run into trouble working on future projects if you need to adjust for different settings, uses, or backgrounds.

Here are some examples of a primary logo and several logo variations in different color formats.

Logos are used in various situations, including signage, websites, postcards, or even outdoor banners. A professional designer will ensure that you have the correct file type for any scenario so that your logo looks great no matter where it is featured.

5. You’ll receive high-quality logo file formats.

When I work on a Custom Brand Identity project for a client, I usually include five different logo file formats (PNG, SVG, JPG, PDF, and EPS) and a cheat sheet. I provide an assortment of formats so that my clients can choose the best logo file for whatever project they’re working on.

It’s important to use the correct logo file format for the medium you’re working in to achieve consistent, high-quality results for your marketing projects. For example, a Facebook profile image, a business card, and an outdoor banner would all get optimal results using different file formats.

A professional designer has knowledge and experience not only in design but also in file formats and how to set clients up for future success with their logo design.

For example, I recently worked on signage design for an event booth. I had to add the company's logos to the signage before sending it to the printer. I checked each of the logo files — almost 20 logos in all — and I noticed that some of the logos included taglines that should have been converted to outlines (converting to outlines changes fonts to vector art, which guarantees that the text in your printed materials will match what you created on the screen. This is an important step to maintain print quality). Instead, they showed as missing fonts. Luckily, I had the missing fonts, but it would have saved a lot of time if the fonts had been converted to outlines before they were sent to me.

Conclusion

Working with a professional designer will save you valuable time and money. While you are making an investment upfront, it will pay off with a timeless, professional logo design that accurately reflects your business and emotionally connects with your audience. You will have a high-quality logo and variants ready for use in various situations and platforms, which will increase your brand consistency and trust in your business. Your new, professional logo design will set your business up for future growth.
