The 5 Best Font Combinations for a Squarespace Blog

Choosing the best font combination for your Squarespace blog can be a time-consuming and challenging task; however, your efforts will pay off because fonts are one of the most important visual elements on your site.

You can create well-researched, high-quality content, but if the fonts you selected are difficult to read or unprofessional, site visitors will quickly lose interest and leave your site. If you use the right fonts, site visitors will continue to read your content. And the longer your visitors stay on your site, the better your search engine optimization ranking (SEO) and the more likely they are to return for future interactions with you.

When setting up your Squarespace blog, you’ll notice that the Squarespace font library offers a large array of fonts to choose from, but you may quickly find yourself struggling to decide which fonts to use.

In this post, I’m going to share some of my favorite font combinations, and I’ll tell you about the process I use when I select brand fonts for a client’s brand identity.

How fonts work in Squarespace

Font menus include all available font options, which include 600 Google fonts as well as 1,000 Adobe fonts. Some of the fonts have a clean, professional look, while others do not and may be more suitable for different needs. Each font has a unique personality, so it’s important to select your fonts carefully. Ideally, you want the personality of your font to match your brand personality.

How do you select fonts for your Squarespace blog?

When you create a blog, you want your site visitors to not only read your content but to interact with you at the end of the post. One of the easiest ways to keep your site visitors engaged is to provide clean, professional-looking content – starting with the right font. Following are some tips to help you select the best font combinations for your website.

Define your target audience

Before choosing fonts, make sure to define your target audience. Once you are clear on who you want to read your blog, you can choose the best fonts that align with your brand personality.

Choose easy-to-read fonts

Many people underestimate the importance of typography for their website and SEO ranking. Site visitors are often time-pressed and want to find solutions to their problems quickly. Anything that slows them down could cause them to leave your site.

Fonts that are difficult to read, such as script or decorative fonts, should not be used for body text. We always want to make the site visitor’s experience as enjoyable as possible so they will stay longer and browse the site.

Choose different font typefaces

Choose font combinations of serif and sans-serif fonts or use the same font with different weights.

What is a serif font? A serif font is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol. Popular serif fonts include Times New Roman and Courier.

What is a sans-serif font? A sans-serif font has no line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol. Popular sans-serif fonts include Helvetica and Arial.

By using two different font types or weights, you create contrast that makes the typography more interesting and easier to read.

Choose fonts that have more than one style

Select fonts that have multiple weights and styles – for example, bold, italics, light, etc. There are some fonts in the Squarespace font library that have only one weight and style. I would suggest avoiding these fonts. Fonts with multiple styles that are also available in different weights, not only create beautiful typography but also help to highlight headlines and certain words.

Pro tip: When you create a blog title, avoid using all capital letters if possible. Uppercase letters or lowercase letters are easier-to-read and create a more friendly appearance.

The benefits of using the best font combinations

Establishes trust and professionalism

When people visit your blog, the first thing they will do (before reading) is take in the overall appearance of your site. So, it’s very important to use typography that gives you a professional appearance and establishes trust with your site visitor.

Increase conversion rates

The best font combinations are not only visually attractive, but they also enhance a site visitor’s experience by making the site easier to navigate. When your blog site looks professional, your site visitors are more likely to click to sign up, opt-in, or purchase.

Improve Search Engine Optimization performance

Font readability is vital to improving your SEO performance. When you provide content that is easy to read, site visitors are more likely to read your content from start to finish. They can also click on links to related pages. The longer they stay on your site, the more your Google ranking will improve.

The 5 best font combinations

I spend a huge amount of time researching typefaces and testing out different font combinations. It’s very important for blogs to use simple and readable fonts to improve the user experience.

Listed below are, in my experience, the 5 best font combinations for your Squarespace blog. These font combinations are versatile and can also be used as your brand fonts to create your marketing collateral. All of the fonts listed are Google fonts (they are free to download and use for both web and print) and they have multiple weights and styles.

1. Rufina + Roboto

2. Playfair Display + Open Sans

3. Cormorant Garamond + Lato

4. Work Sans + Source Serif Pro

5. Poppins + Lora

Conclusion

I hope you feel more confident in your ability to pick the best font combination for your Squarespace blog. Although it can seem overwhelming at first, if you focus on easy-to-read fonts that have more than one style, create contrast with a sans-serif/serif combination, and convey your brand personality, you may find it’s not as difficult as you first thought. If you keep these factors in mind while selecting fonts, you will find more of your target audience reading your content and ultimately converting.
