10 Professional Fonts for a Simple Logo

Choosing fonts for a simple logo design can be a challenging task for non-designers and sometimes even for professional designers. There is an overwhelming number of fonts available for download on the internet and narrowing down your search to either sans-serif or serif fonts won’t make the process much easier. So how do you find a font that is the right fit for your business?

How to choose a font for a simple logo design

As a graphic designer, I’ve helped entrepreneurs and small businesses by creating simple logo designs that are both memorable and timeless. In this post, I’ll share some of my best typography tips with you to create a professional, simple logo design for your business.

It starts with your brand identity

Your logo is not your brand. It’s only one part of your brand identity. 

Think about your brand for a moment. Picture everything — from the packaging for your product, to the way you treat your clients, to your website or storefront. 

What three words would you use to describe your brand to a friend? Some examples may include modern, feminine, friendly, warm, classic, etc. Write these three words down.

Know your target market

Who buys from you? Who are your key supporters and brand ambassadors? Try to visualize them in your mind. Now try to describe them in three words and write them down.

Finally, look at both of your descriptions and choose the words that best match your brand identity. Effective branding draws from both your brand style as well as the style of your avid followers.

Choosing your logo fonts

Now that you have your descriptive words, you need to choose a font that best reflects those words.

Pro-tip #1: Choose a high-quality sans-serif font

To achieve a simple, minimal logo, I would suggest using a sans-serif font. A sans-serif font adheres to the minimalist design theory that less is more. This family of fonts removes all the unnecessary markings that appear to form small distracting tails on the characters. What is left is a clean, stripped-down version of the font.

 
 

Pro-tip #2: Choose only 1-2 fonts for your logo

Make sure that the fonts you select accurately portray your brand. Once you’ve selected 1-2 fonts, you will need to continue to use them to maintain brand consistency. While it may be tempting to use your logo fonts in other marketing content, I’d recommend using them only for your logo. This is what helps to make your logo stand out from all the other elements in your marketing assets.

Pro-tip #3: Choose a font for your headers

While the font that you select for your header will be different from the one you use for your logo, they should still complement one another. It’s advisable to use a font with several complementary styles (a font family). For the header, use either the regular font or the bold version.

Pro-tip #4: Choose your body copy font

Your highest priority for the body copy is to select a font that is easy to read. To give your marketing asset a modern feel, a good rule of thumb is to go with a sans-serif font for the body copy. However, if you are looking for more of a classic feel, use a serif type of font. For simplicity, you could choose the same font family as your header but select the light or regular version.
